Perceptions of Beauty

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

In Ting’s article we read for today, she briefly discusses ideas about Asian-Americans adopting Americanized of standards of beauty, and sexuality. This reminded me of a Korean movie my friend showed me.

It’s called 200 lb. Beauty and it’s about a young woman who wants to be a pop star, but her weight is holding her back. So she blackmails her doctor into giving her  plastic surgery and her life is drastically improved. Although it’s a fun movie, it shows the influence of American culture, especially in the fad of plastic surgery many people have taken up towards pursuit of idealized “American beauty”, changing their body types, eye shape, etc. It also creates sort of a dialogue for evolving traditional expectations of sexuality in gender roles. If you’re bored this weekend, you should definitely check it out: watch it here.
